Ford is testing technology that tells drivers how to avoid red traffic lights

Ford is trialling new technology that could enable drivers to “ride the green wave” and never sit at a red light again.
The motoring giant is working on a feature that can gather information on traffic light timings from roadside units and then display this information to drivers as a speed they should travel at to ensure they get a green light.

The trial is a part of wider testing for UK Autodrive, a scheme that is looking into vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure technology as part of investigating the benefits of connected and driverless cars in the UK.
Christian Ress, from Ford Research and Advanced Engineering said: “There’s not much worse after a long day than to hit one red light after another on the drive home, and be forced to stop and start again at every junction.
“Enabling drivers to ‘ride the green wave’ also means a smoother, continuous journey that helps to improve the flow of traffic and provide significant reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and fuel consumption.”

A similar system is already used in Copenhagen and Amsterdam to help cyclists avoid red lights, something drivers in the UK spent two days each year waiting to turn green, according to the carmaker’s research.
Ford also said that in the next year it will begin trialling technology that alerts drivers when another vehicle is blocking a junction ahead, as well as when an emergency services vehicle is approaching.
