Secondary school teachers in the TUI have been directed not to undertake any work normally done by ASTI members who are involved in industrial action.
The first of seven work stoppages is due to take place next Thursday amid a long-running row over pay.
The TUI said that in cases where a school's teaching staff has dual-union membership, it is up to each individual Board of Management to decide whether or not to open the school on a strike day.
"Our ASTI colleagues are in dispute, for example, on Thursday they'll be on strike, so we'll be telling our members that is the schools remain open that day, that they are not to take any of the classes of our ASTI colleagues," said TUI president Joanne Irwin.
"And when ASTI withdraw from supervision substitution on the 7th of November, we have directed our members there not to engage in the work that was formerly done by their colleagues in the ASTI."
